WFSW Appeal for Peace

To professionally committed and socially responsible scientific workers

For the founders of WFSW, the most important of its original aims was to establish links between colleagues from different parts of the world, in particular between those who live and work in politically opposed nations or blocs, where tensions can explode into all-out conflicts at any time. This ambition is still on the agenda today.
Thanks to our specific training and multidisciplinary skills as well as to our work and expertise, we scientists have the capacity to influence decision-makers and alert our fellow citizens concerning the nature of the risks and their implications for the common future of mankind if the world pursues the path charted by the current dominant powers.
WFSW believes that the threats the world is facing require, more than ever, a commitment to peace on behalf of scientific workers, their associations, professional organizations and trade unions.
WFSW and its affiliated organizations intend to actively cooperate with NGOs and groups whose activity  encompasses the most various fields of interest to society.
WFSW intends to contribute to fostering an enlightened debate within higher education and research  institutions, as well as in the public arena, concerning the nature, roots and meaning of the threats in today’s geopolitical context.
WFSW warns about the risks that the current conflicts may end up at uncontrollable confrontations, including nuclear ones.
WFSW emphasizes the necessity of guaranteeing fundamental democratic rights such as freedom of  expression and the right to act collectively for peace, social justice and preservation of the human environment within the higher education and research institutions, as well as within companies.
For WFSW, scientists are an essential driver for a peaceful and sustainable future of mankind. Their production sheds light on the issues at stake and the responses to needs.
