Smati Zoghbi (1956-2025)

Scientific worker, trade union leader and committed advocate for international scientific cooperation.

Smati Zoghbi devoted many years of his life to strengthening cooperation among scientific workers and promoting the values of peace, solidarity and international collaboration through the World Federation of Scientific Workers (WFSW).

As Secretary General of the National Union of Permanent Researchers (SNCP) in Algeria, he played an active role in fostering links between the Algerian scientific community and the WFSW, helping to strengthen cooperation between scientific workers from different countries and cultures. His commitment reflected the Federation’s long-standing belief that science should serve peace, humanity and international understanding.

Smati also contributed to the work of the WFSW International Commission on Disarmament, Security and Peace, working alongside colleagues from across the world in support of dialogue, scientific responsibility and peaceful international cooperation.

Those who had the privilege of working with Smati remember him for his generosity, quiet determination and unwavering commitment to bringing people together. Through his kindness, openness and collaborative spirit, he earned the friendship and respect of colleagues throughout the Federation.

His Legacy

Smati Zoghbi believed deeply in the importance of dialogue and cooperation between scientific workers across national boundaries. Throughout his work within the WFSW, he encouraged collaboration, mutual respect and solidarity among scientists, helping to strengthen the Federation’s international community.

A particularly significant example of this commitment was the 81st WFSW Executive Council, held in Algeria in September 2012. As Secretary General of the SNCP, Smati played an active role in welcoming the international delegates and bringing together the Federation and the Algerian scientific community. The meeting, held with the involvement of Algerian higher education and scientific research institutions, also provided opportunities for dialogue with scientists and trade union representatives from across the Maghreb.

His contribution reflected the values that have guided the WFSW since its foundation: the promotion of science in the service of peace, cooperation among peoples and the responsible engagement of scientific workers in addressing the challenges facing humanity.

Although much of his work took place quietly, often behind the scenes, his dedication helped reinforce the international friendships and spirit of solidarity that continue to define the Federation today.

Smati Zoghbi’s generosity, commitment and belief in international cooperation remain an enduring source of inspiration for the World Federation of Scientific Workers and for all those who continue its mission.

Colleagues remember Smati not only for his commitment to the Federation, but also for his warmth, generosity and the friendships he built throughout the international scientific community.
