Symposium ‘Science for Peace and Equality: Fostering Diversity, Inclusion and Mutual Respect’
Thursday, June 12, 9:40

Full program to print: Symposium EN

Science and scientists are facing global upheaval.
We live in a world profoundly destabilized by the intensifying effects of climate change, the proliferation of deadly conflicts, and the erosion of international law and institutions.
The recent abrupt changes in the domestic and foreign policies of the world’s largest economic power  are a new source of instability.
We are witnessing today,

  • A widespread aggression and a desire to annex foreign territories, both neighbouring and more distant,
  • The widespread imposition of political sanctions and trade barriers;
  • A frantic pursuit of mineral resource exploitation;
  • The extinction of development assistance mechanisms for poor countries and the abandonment of framework institutions for international cooperation, including in the field of global health;
  • The disappearance of research institutions, the dismissal of scientific personnel, and the  dismantling of essential knowledge infrastructures.
    These developments put science and scientists under severe strain, undermining international collaboration and threatening the continuity of scientific progress and the transmission of knowledge.

First round table
Strengthening scientific solidarity and resilience

  • In a world increasingly under stress, what are the essential levers for fostering scientific solidarity and cooperation?
  • What concrete actions and organizational frameworks can help scientific workers maintain their professional commitment and social status?
  • How can we preserve the continuity of existing and future research programs, scientific collaborations, and the dissemination of knowledge?

Second round table
Science in the service of solidarity, peace, and sustainable development

  • What alternatives can be developed to overcome the dangerous dynamic of imperial, economic, and military confrontation?
  • What are the scientific priorities for sustainable development objectives and international relations based on cooperation and peace?
  • How can scientific diplomacy serve as an effective tool for fostering dialogue, cooperation, and achieving sustainable global development?
