Roger Dittmann (1933-2019)

Physicist, educator and dedicated advocate for peace and international scientific cooperation.

The faithful representative of the United States Federation of Scientists and Scholars (USFSS) on the Executive Council of the World Federation of Scientific Workers (WFSW), Roger Dittmann passed away on 5 December 2019 at the age of 86.

A nuclear physicist and Professor at California State University, Fullerton, Roger devoted both his professional and personal life to the promotion of peace and the responsible engagement of scientists in society. He was a tireless advocate for peace and one of those American scientists who spoke out against militarism and the imperial policies of their government. His convictions, always expressed with intellectual honesty and respect for others, reflected his deep commitment to the ideals upon which the WFSW was founded.

Within the Federation, Roger made a particularly valuable contribution to the work of the Peace, Disarmament and Cooperation Group, bringing original perspectives that enriched discussions and broadened the Federation’s international outlook.

Through his efforts, the WFSW was invited to present a contribution at the symposium “UNESCO and Global Science”, held in Anaheim, California, in January 1999—an important opportunity to present the Federation’s work to a wider scientific audience.

Many colleagues also remember how he would combine visits to Yugoslavia, where he had family ties, with his participation in WFSW meetings in Europe, reflecting his constant dedication to the Federation’s activities.

Above all, Roger is remembered for his kindness, generosity and humanity. Colleagues recall the warm smile that lit up his face whenever he sought to persuade others, even during the most challenging discussions. His courtesy, openness and quiet sense of humour earned him the respect and affection of scientific workers from around the world.

Roger Dittmann’s contribution to the WFSW extended far beyond his scientific expertise. His unwavering commitment to peace, international cooperation and the ethical responsibility of scientists continues to inspire the Federation and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
