Call for Green and Low-Carbon Development
Green Low-Carbon Development Initiative
At the International Symposium on “Green Low-Carbon Development and the Responsibility of Scientists” organized by the World Federation of Scientific Workers (WFSW) and the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) participants thoroughly analyzed the severe challenges facing human society on the path to sustainable development.
They earnestly discussed possible solutions and formulated this Green Low-Carbon Development Initiative. Green low-carbon development is the only path for humanity to achieve the ambitious goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Paris Agreement sets the target to limit the global average temperature rise to within 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2030.
Currently, we are nearing this critical threshold, with the global average temperature in 2023 being 1.4°C higher than the pre-industrial baseline. This indicates that we are at a decisive historical moment and must act immediately to fulfill commitments and prevent the catastrophic consequences of climate change.
In this context, the concept that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” is increasingly highlighting its profound significance. It emphasizes the importance of balancing environmental protection with economic development and advocates for using green low-carbon technologies to lead economic transformation, achieve a virtuous cycle of economic activity and ecological environmental protection, and promote sustainable development. Technological innovation is the key driving force for green transformation, opening up vast space for green lowcarbon development and showing great potential and hope, from breakthroughs in clean energy technology to innovations in resource recycling, from cutting-edge explorations in ecological restoration to solutions for ocean carbon sequestration.
Therefore, we call upon the global scientific community to face the urgent challenges of climate change and sustainable development. We must transcend national and disciplinary boundaries, further strengthen openness, communication, and cooperation, and support high-level scientific research and technological innovation to seize the only opportunity to save the planet and build a more united, peaceful, green, and prosperous world.
As a Chinese saying goes, “The journey ahead may be long and arduous, but with sustained actions, we will eventually reach our destination and embrace a brighter future.” Let us, with firm belief and unremitting efforts, further unite the mighty forces of global scientific workers, and promote positive measures by countries to facilitate the exchange and application of green low-carbon technologies. Together, we can build, share, and enjoy a beautiful future of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
Act now, global scientific workers!
